Experience the ‘sunny side’ of Christmas in Sydney!
Christmas in Sydney is a magical time when streets come alive with lights and tinsel, Christmas trees and carols… a time that brings family and friends together for the holidays. But, unlike the picture-book ‘White Christmas’ of the West, Australia celebrates this festival in the midst of blue skies and bright sunshine.
Christmas Day is celebrated in myriad ways, considering the harmonious mix of ethnic groups that reside in Sydney. Families that prefer to celebrate at home indulge in a traditional Christmas feast with a hot roast, glazed ham, cold meats, salads and desserts galore. Others take on the sunny skies and plan outdoor get-togethers with beers and barbeques, without compromising the Christmas sentiment of love, friendship and giving gifts!
International tourists flock to Sydney to escape the snowy cold winter in their countries. Celebrating Christmas at Bondi Beach, basking under the glorious Sydney sun, has almost become a tradition with many. Darling Harbour will be dotted with Santas on surf boards and many more that are elevated on stilts, in keeping with the festive atmosphere.
In the run up to Christmas, the city showcases enormous sparkling Christmas trees and is lit up with decorations and projections that transform the façade of the glorious Sydney Town Hall into a kaleidoscope of colour. The festivity is contagious with Sydney’s favourite choirs singing in the City Centre and family Christmas concerts organised at many venues. ‘Carols in the Domain’ at the Domain Gardens near the Sydney Opera House is another event loved by all, and is always held on the last Sunday before Christmas.
With the Santa festival, Christmas fireworks, delightful decorations, shopping, carols and karaoke…Christmas in Sydney is definitely a season to remember!
