About This Experience

The Ocean Rafting Northern Exposure is a 6-hour adventure tour departing Airlie Beach by a high-speed semi-rigid inflatable vessel. It visits the northern end of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, includes a guided National Park bushwalk to Hill Inlet Lookout, and features snorkelling at two fringing coral reef sites around Hook Island. A tropical beach lunch, all snorkel equipment, and reef naturalist talks are included. Departure is from Coral Sea Marina at 9:00am, returning at 3:15pm.

Hill Inlet & Whitehaven Beach

Your day begins as you set off on one of the fastest boats in the Whitsundays. Feel the wind in your hair and the expanse of the Coral Sea and islands waiting to be explored.

Once you get to Whitsunday Island, nothing quite prepares you for your first view of Hill Inlet. Your guide leads you on a National Park bushwalk to the ridge, where the panorama unfolds like something off a postcard. The swirling silica sands shift with the tides, painting the water in ribbons of white, jade and aqua. And, from the Hill Inlet Lookout, it is quite a spectacular sight. Then it’s down to the northern end of Whitehaven Beach, one of the world’s most celebrated stretches of sand, for an hour of beach time and a tropical lunch right on the shore.

Two Reef Snorkel Sites

The Northern Exposure is a snorkel-lover’s choice. You’ll visit two separate coral reef sites around Hook Island, spending up to an hour at each. The crew provides personalised snorkel instruction and flotation devices; so whether you’re a confident swimmer or this is your first time underwater, you’ll be well taken care of. Look out for turtles, tropical fish, and hard and soft corals in waters that feel impossibly clear.

Who Is This Cruise Best Suited For

This tour is best suited to adventure-seekers and snorkel enthusiasts who want maximum time in the water alongside the iconic Whitehaven Beach experience. It’s a great pick for active couples, solo travellers, and families with older children who want to pack a full Whitsundays day into one thrilling itinerary.

What is the difference between the Northern Exposure and Southern Lights tours?
The Northern Exposure tour prioritises snorkelling, visiting two separate reef sites around Hook Island (up to an hour at each), plus the northern end of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet for 1–1.5 hours. The Southern Lights tour offers more beach time (two hours at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach) and one snorkel site. Choose Northern Exposure if snorkelling is your priority.

Will I get seasick on the Ocean Rafting vessel?
Seasickness is very rare on Ocean Rafting tours. The open-style design and high speed of the semi-rigid inflatable vessels means you don’t experience the slow rocking motion that causes seasickness on larger, slower boats.

How long will I actually spend on the boat?
The longest stretch aboard is the transit from Airlie Beach to the Whitsunday Islands, just over an hour each way. The rest of your day is spent on the Hill Inlet hike, snorkelling or on the beach.

What if I’m not a confident swimmer?
A: Not a problem. Let the check-in team and the crew know, and they’ll assist you throughout the snorkel sessions. Life jackets and pool noodles are available for extra buoyancy, and personalised snorkel instruction is included for all guests.

Is there parking at Coral Sea Marina?
Yes. Car parks are available at both the northern and southern ends of Coral Sea Marina. Daily parking costs between $6 and $14.

How long is spent at Whitehaven Beach on the Northern Exposure tour?
You’ll spend between 1 and 1.5 hours at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

Are photos taken on the tour? How much do they cost?
Yes. Crew members use GoPros throughout the day. A preview link will be emailed to you 72 hours after your tour. Individual photos are $8 each, or $4 per photo when you purchase four or more.

Is there shade on Whitehaven Beach?
Shade coverage on Whitehaven Beach is minimal, particularly at certain times of day. Sunscreen reapplication is strongly recommended throughout your visit.

Can I bring my own drinks?

BYO alcohol is not permitted. However, you are welcome to bring your own soft drinks or bottled water. Beer, water, soft drinks, fruit juices, and chocolates are also available for purchase on board.

  • Bushwalk and snorkel sessions may not be suitable for pregnant guests or those with serious medical conditions.
  • Motion sickness is uncommon, but medication is recommended if you're prone to it.
  • The crew adjusts the route based on weather and sea conditions.
