About This Experience
For travellers who want the best vantage point throughout the experience, Upper Deck Window seating offers elevated views across the vast expanse of Macquarie Harbour and the surrounding World Heritage wilderness. From the moment Harbour Master II leaves Strahan, you'll have a front-row perspective on ever-changing landscapes, from rugged harbour shores to pristine rainforest-lined waterways of Gordon River
The Upper Deck Window seat is the best seat on the boat, and it earns that distinction at every turn. Elevated above the main deck for wider, airier views across the water, with a dedicated window that gives you a private frame for changing views that make the experience whole. The Gordon River with its mirror-like reflections and rainforests close in right before your eyes. Step out onto the open-air decks whenever you like, but this seat has a way of pulling you back.
What you will see with World Heritage Cruises:
Hells Gates: From your upper deck window, this appears as a surreal scene where the Southern Ocean narrows to a channel and opens into Macquarie Harbour. It was named Hells Gates by convicts being transported from mainland Australia to the penal colony Sarah Island, which was known to be hell on earth.
Liberty Point: This is where Atlantic Salmon and Ocean Trout farms that thrive in the cold, exceptionally clean Tasmanian water. What you're watching through your window, will be on your plate in a few hours… local seafood as good as it gets.
Sarah Island: The boat pulls in at Sarah Island where you step ashore into a history that continues to surprise. Your guides take you through the rigours of Australia's most feared convict colony, more dreaded than Port Arthur, more isolated and more punishing. Yet, the men confined here managed to turn it around to a yard that built ships that sailed the world.
Gordon River: Nothing you see compares to the beauty of the winding Gordon River. In the stillness of the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, your window becomes a portrait of one of the planet's last intact temperate wildernesses.
Heritage Landing: Here too, you get to step ashore and experience the rainforest boardwalk through thickets of Huon Pine, trees measured in millennia, not centuries.
Lunch is served to your upper deck window seat, made fresh on board with Tasmanian produce. There is a well-stocked cash bar and galley with snacks and beverages available for purchase. The boat returns to the wharf at 3:00pm, and all you can think about will be those six hours and views that you can’t seem to get out of your head!
NOTE: Evening Departures (Dec–Jan): Additional evening departures operate during the peak season. Choose your departure at the time of booking.
