Sydney brings the big guns out on Australia Day, every year without fail. Spending a day on the harbour and don’t know how best to. Here’s how:
Commemorating the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet from Great Britain, Australia Day also signifies the diversity and achievements of the nation in addition to its past and its future. The best place to celebrate the same: the crowning jewel of the city, the glorious Sydney Harbour.
Start off the morning by witnessing the Wugulora Indigenous Morning Ceremony and catch a glimpse of the world’s oldest surviving culture. Enjoy special performances by Aboriginal dancers and singers. Sing along the national anthem in English followed by the same in Aboriginal language Dharawal. This will be followed by the
Aboriginal and Australian flags being raised on Sydney Harbour Bridge to mark the start of the day.
This will soon be followed by the ceremony where Lord Mayor welcomes Aussieland’s newest citizens. Then begins the iconic Ferrython, the annual ferry race from the Sydney Opera House to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Take part in the salute to the nation later at the 21-gun salute, paying tribute to the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force.
With the Red Berets, Qantas and Russian Roolettes flying over Sydney Harbour, the day extends to the Australia Day Harbour Parade. With 40 decorated boats competing against each other for the honour of "best dressed”, it’s a spectacle to behold. To conclude the day celebrations, witness the regatta with over 100 boats racing around the harbour.
