Underwater Hotel Overnight Reef Stays In Whitsundays

Reef Stays at the Reefworld pontoon on Hardy Reef are akin to staying in an underwater hotel in the Whitsundays. Guests cruise from the mainland or islands, spend a full day and night surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef, and return the following day.

Australian Cruise Group brings the best reef stay options together in one place, making it easier to compare the experiences and book the one that suits your style of travel.

Every Whitsundays overnight tour includes snorkelling, optional diving experiences, a semi-submersible tour, access to the underwater observatory and meals on the pontoon. Wake up to a beautiful morning surrounded by one of the world’s most remarkable reef systems. The main difference between the experiences lies in where you spend the night.

Accommodation Options
Two distinct overnight stay experiences are available on the same pontoon.

Sleeping Under the Open Sky (Reef Sleep)

• Open-air reef beds on the upper deck of the pontoon
• A chance to sleep beneath the stars with the sounds of the ocean around you
• Best suited to travellers who enjoy nature and a more immersive outdoor experience

Sleeping Beneath the Reef (Reef Suites)

• Private underwater suite with floor-to-ceiling windows
• Marine life passes by your room throughout the evening and early morning
• A great choice for couples, special occasions and travellers seeking a more exclusive stay as it is the only underwater hotel in Whitsundays.

What Every Reef Stay Includes
Both options are complete cruise-and-stay packages rather than standalone accommodation. Regardless of which stay you choose, your package includes:

• Return cruise transfers from Port of Airlie, with pick-ups from Hamilton Island and Daydream Island
• A full day of reef activities, including the semi-submersible tour and access to the underwater observatory
• Breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus morning and afternoon tea across the two days
• A beverage package including beer, wine and soft drinks, with a licensed onboard bar for additional purchases
• Optional upgrades such as snorkelling, scuba diving and scenic helicopter flights

Who Is This Experience For?
Reef stays are particularly suitable for, but not limited to:

• Couples celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or special occasion
• Visitors looking for a Great Barrier Reef experience beyond a standard day tour
• Wildlife and nature enthusiasts who want extra time on the reef
• Travellers searching for a memorable overnight experience in the Whitsundays

Both experiences showcase the Great Barrier Reef in a way that few visitors ever experience. The final decision comes down to how you want to spend the night. Whether you choose an open-air reef bed or an underwater suite, you'll enjoy an overnight reef experience unlike any other in the Whitsundays.

So, which will it be? Beneath the reef or beneath the stars?

FAQs

What is the difference between Reefsleep and Reefsuites?
Both experiences take place at Reefworld on Hardy Reef and include the same cruise, reef activities, meals and overnight stay. The main difference is the accommodation. Reefsleep features open-air reef beds beneath the stars, while Reefsuites offers a private underwater bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the reef. Do I need to choose between Reef
Sleep and Reef Suites before booking?
Yes. Although both experiences share the same pontoon and itinerary, the overnight accommodation is different and must be selected when you book. Where do Reef Stays depart from? Reef stays depart from Port of Airlie, with pick-up options also available from Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.

Yes. Swimming is not essential to enjoy the experience. Guests can explore the reef through the underwater observatory, the semi-submersible tour and by simply relaxing on the pontoon.
Is one night enough to experience the Great Barrier Reef?
An overnight stay offers considerably more time than a standard day cruise. You'll experience the reef during the afternoon, sunset, evening and early morning, when the atmosphere is quieter and very different from daytime visits.
Which reef stay is better for couples?
Both experiences are popular with couples. Reefsleep suits those who enjoy sleeping beneath the stars, while Reefsuites offers greater privacy and an underwater room, making it a popular choice for honeymoons and special occasions.
Can I see marine life from the Reef Suite?
Yes. The underwater suites have large transparent windows that allow you to observe fish and other marine life as they move around the reef.
Is snorkelling free on both experiences?
A guided snorkelling tour with equipment is available for free on the Reef Suite experience. And as for the Reef Sleep experience, you have to pay extra for the snorkelling experience.
