About This Experience

Every year between May and November, thousands of Humpback Whales make their epic northern migration along the coast of Port Stephens, and the 2.5hr Whale Watching Cruise from Nelson Bay puts you right in the middle of it. This is a full, multi-experience outing on board the ‘Hinchinbrook Explorer’ or ‘MV Osprey’. You will see Humpback Whales along the legendary 'Humpback Highway', and explore the outer islands of Port Stephens where you could see Australian Fur Seals and Bottlenose Dolphins too.

The Whale Watching Experience

Nothing quite prepares you for the scale of Humpback Whales up close. These are the largest and most surface-active whales in the ocean weighing about 40 tonnes, yet capable of hurling their entire bodies out of the water in a full breach. On a good day out on the Humpback Highway, you may witness spy hops, pectoral slaps, body rolls and, if you’re lucky, a breach that silences an entire deck. The Captain’s live commentary gives you the language and context to understand what you’re watching, making every behaviour more vivid and every sighting more memorable.

The cruise also takes you on an exploration of the outer islands of Port Stephens… a scenic detour that gives you multiple experiences for the price of a single cruise. Keep your eyes open for Australian Fur Seals hauled out on the rocks and for Bottlenose Dolphins riding the bow wave.

You get the best possible vantage points from the two levels of outer viewing decks. Whether you’re a first-time whale watcher or a seasoned wildlife enthusiast, this cruise definitely earns its place on any Port Stephens itinerary. Are you ready to book your whale watching cruise from Nelson Bay now?

Who Is This Experience Suited For

This cruise is perfect for families, couples, wildlife lovers and anyone visiting Port Stephens during the whale migration season. The multi-species encounter with whales, dolphins and fur seals makes it compelling for guests of all ages, and the outer island component adds scenic variety that keeps the whole experience engaging from departure to return.
