About This Experience

The Big Cat Green Island tour is a full-day cruise to Green Island, a coral cay sitting at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef approximately 27 kilometres north-east of Cairns. The tour has two departures from Marlin Wharf at 9am and 11am, giving you up to 5.5 hours on the island to explore at your own pace. The base package includes return transfers; a wide range of optional reef activities, dining and dives, can be added to build a personalised reef day.

The Green Island Freestyle Experience
The 9am boat is the large, air-conditioned ‘Big Cat’ catamaran, a stable, comfortable vessel suited to families and those who prefer a more leisurely transfer, which takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The 11am departure uses the ‘Reef Rocket’, a smaller and faster speedboat that reaches Green Island in approximately 45 minutes, ideal for guests who want to maximise time on the island.

Green Island is one of the only coral cays on the Great Barrier Reef that supports a tropical rainforest on the island and the reef ecosystem below. Surrounded by living coral gardens accessible directly from the beach, the island has shallow, clear waters suited to first-time snorkellers and confident swimmers alike. Marineland Melanesia, the island's heritage wildlife attraction, is also located here if you want an experience that is beyond the reef.

On arrival you can walk the rainforest boardwalks, find a spot on the tranquil beach, or get straight into the water. Optional activities include snorkelling (gear for hire), a glass-bottom boat tour, a semi-submarine reef tour, a guided snorkel experience, a Snorkel Safari guided by a marine biologist along the outer wall coral formations, and introductory or certified scuba diving.

Who Is This Tour Best Suited For
The base package suits day-trippers, families and first-time visitors who want flexibility to bring their own food and drinks, choose their own activities and spend the day as they like.
The upgrade options make it equally well suited to reef-goers who want structured reef experiences, divers and those who would like to have a marine biologist-guided snorkel.
